NYFF64 Main Slate selection Dao, directed by French-Senegalese filmmaker Alain Gomis, captures the intricate rites and rituals of an extended family spread across two continents—at a memorial in Guinea-Bissau and a wedding in Paris. Also in the Main Slate, Arie and Chuko Esiri’s Clarissa, a contemporary Nigeria-set adaptation of Virgina Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, follows a family’s preparations for a celebration across two different time periods, simultaneously tracing the uneasy coexistence of two different social worlds in Lagos, separated by class and colonialism.
