The 64th New York Film Festival will host the world premiere of Kleber Mendonça Filho’s South of Tehran, the first film in a new annual initiative, NYFF Encounters, which invites one filmmaker with a film at the festival to create an original short. The project takes its inspiration from a four-minute short film by Agnès Varda, Pier Paolo Pasolini — Agnès Varda — New York — 1967, shot when the two legendary filmmakers were attending the 4th New York Film Festival. In this spirit, the eight-minute South of Tehran is a prismatic reflection on cinema and memory that emerged from conversations between Mendonça Filho and Iranian director Jafar Panahi, both of whom screened films at NYFF63 last fall. To celebrate the inaugural installment of NYFF Encounters, NYFF Talks presents a special screening of both shorts alongside an extended conversation with Mendonça Filho and producer Emilie Lesclaux about the making of the short and the encounters made possible by film festivals.
