High up in the stark Mountain West in the early 1950s, older son Mikey (Fred Hechinger) watches as his family slowly comes undone. After his brother Tommy (Kit Connor) heads off to fight in the Korean War, his mother (Caitríona Balfe) begins to exhibit signs of depression and disenchantment with his coal miner father (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and with her provincial, isolated life. One day, during a blinding snowstorm, she disappears into the wild, leaving her son and husband to both search for her and fend for themselves. This simple premise, adapted from a short story by Colm Tóibín, grows into something unexpected and rich in the hands of filmmaker Andrew Haigh (whose work includes the acclaimed 45 Years and All of Us Strangers, NYFF61), blossoming into a subtly observed tale of emotional growth and sexual awakening, its beautiful yet forbidding landscape captured in ravishing cinematography by André Turpin.
