After joining the graduate acting programme at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Mahershala Ali became a regular on the series Crossing Jordan and Threat Matrix before his breakthrough in the sci-fi series The 4400. He made his first impact on the big screen in David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and was outstanding as Remy Danton in House of Cards. But it was his pivotal role as a surrogate father figure in Moonlight that established him as a star and saw him win an Oscar for his performance. He would win his second Academy Award, alongside a BAFTA and Golden Globe, playing Dr. Donald Shirley, a gifted pianist touring the Deep South in the 1960s, in Green Book.
Subsequent roles have seen Mahershala Ali further expand his range, from appearing in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and playing the investigating officer in series three of True Detective to performances in Swan Song and Leave the World Behind. Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother sees him balance the emotionally intense characters he has honed so well on screen with a figure driven by action. We welcome Mahershala Ali to the festival to discuss his rich body of work.
