John Malkovich is a two-time Academy Award-nominated actor, producer and director whose singular body of work has established him as one of the most distinctive and versatile performers of his generation. Following his Oscar-nominated breakthrough in Places in the Heart (1984), Malkovich quickly established himself as one of cinema’s most compelling actors, with memorable performances in The Killing Fields, Empire of the Sun and Dangerous Liaisons, where his contemporary interpretation of Valmont brought him international recognition.
He went on to work with some of cinema’s most acclaimed directors, appearing in Bernardo Bertolucci’s the Sheltering Sky, Jane Campion’s The Portrait of a Lady and Wolfgang Petersen’s In the Line of Fire, for which he received his second Academy Award nomination for his chilling portrayal of assassin Mitch Leary. He brought the same range to mainstream cinema as the charismatic villain Cyrus ‘The Virus’ Grissom in Con Air, while Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich offered a playful exploration of his singular screen persona.
In 2002, Malkovich made his feature directorial debut with The Dancer Upstairs, a sensuous and moving adaptation of Nicholas Shakespeare’s novel. Across film and television, he has collaborated with directors including Michelangelo Antonioni, Liliana Cavani, Wim Wenders, Raúl Ruiz, Clint Eastwood, Joel and Ethan Coen, Julian Schnabel and Paolo Sorrentino. Alongside his work as an actor, he has continued to expand his creative practice as a director, producer, theatre artist, fashion designer and multidisciplinary performer.
