Brad Bird made his first film when he was 14, which impressed executives at Disney so much they offered him an informal apprenticeship. Following his studies at CalArts he worked on a variety of projects for Disney, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin, and was an executive consultant, as well as occasional writer and director, on the first eight series of The Simpsons. During this time, he directed his first feature film, the beloved The Iron Giant.
He wrote and directed the Academy Award-winning The Incredibles, even voicing the character of Edna Mode. He would continue his Oscar success with his subsequent animated feature, Ratatouille. He then pivoted to live action, teaming up with Tom Cruise to direct the box office behemoth Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and realising the sci-fi adventure Tomorrowland. Brad Bird originated the story for Ray Gunn over 30 years ago, so we are delighted to be screening the film in the festival and to welcome him to this Screen Talk to discuss his career.
